Government of India has appointed an expert panel to redesign the helmets after it was found out that the current helmet design adheres to European standards. The existing design makes the helmets bulky and stuffy and is hence unsuitable for smaller Indian heads and hot tropical weather.
It is necessary to curb the growing fatalities on road and people do not prefer to wear helmets owing to the weight and bulky design. But the new designed helmets will be lighter, safer and equipped with air vents. The panel will also set safety standards for children’s helmets. The ministry hopes that the number of helmet users in India rises after the new design comes into force.
