Repsol Honda's Dani Pedrosa won his first race in the 2016 season ahead of Valentino Rossi and Jorge Lorenzo.
Jorge Lorenzo got to a flying start at turn 1, but Valentino Rossi roughed him up on the next lap, overtaking him aggressively at Turn 6 on the second lap. Marc Marquez was close behind In third, Rossi splitting the field by setting a blistering pace up front, gapping Lorenzo by a second and a half on lap 6.
Dani Pedrosa also got a great start from fifth on the grid, the high track temperature coupled to the softer option front tire choice made him set record breaking pace, overtaking Marquez and Lorenzo In quick succession (he had to reduce gaps of a second each to overtake them) and was on the rear wheel of Valentino Rossi by Lap 14. Rossi retaliated but couldn't hold a candle to Pedrosa's lap times, who set a circuit race record in the process- a 1:32.897. Rossi tried to stick with Dani but ultimately let him disappear into the distance finishing 2.8 seconds behind the raging Spaniard.
Maverick Viñales in the Suzuki fought hard with Andrea Dovizioso's factory Ducati, the 21 year old Spaniard beating the 29 year old Italian fair and square. He was told to drop a position for exceeding track limits but immediately regained fifth place from the Italian.
Pedrosa's win is the 8th different winner in 8 successive races, breaking the record set way back in 1948. Rossi has reduced Marc Marquez's advantage to 43 points with 5 rounds to go.
