The dawn of January 1, 2019, saw the first day of the contentious compulsry helmet drive being implemented across city areas even as a huge chunk of Punekars remained rebellious about the new norm, citing a variety of reasons for not donning the eseentila motorcycle gear.

At the same time, thousands were also seen conforming with and even welcoming the move as a sea of helmet clad two wheeler riders were seen across the city. The traffic police booked and fined several riders for avoiding helmets and made them pay the mandatory Rs. 500 fine. Meanwhile city corporate offices are also supporting the drive by allowing parking spaces only to two wheeler riders with helmets. With lack of parking spaces available elsewhere, the riders will surely be forced to wear the riding gear.

Prominent citizens and activists of Pune joined hands under under non-political banner, Action Committee Against Helmet Compulsion, to oppose the new police mandate that said that they are looting the public. Over 200 riders conducted a massive motorcycle rally. They skipped the helmets and used traditional headgear, including Puneri pagdi, traditional pheta, Phule pagota etc.
