Japanese motorcycle maker Yamaha is planning to shift its focus to the premium-bike segment and scooters in India, with an increasing number of buyers preferring scooters to mass-market motorcycles and seeking to buy performance bikes. Having dabbled with the idea of introducing more mass-market motorcycles for bigger volumes, Yamaha has barely managed a break-through in the 100-125 cc segment, which has been on the decline over the last few years.
According to reports, apart from revamping the existing 150 cc models, the R15, FZ and Fazer with ABS variants, Yamaha intends to bring in the new FZ 250, internally codenamed 03A by March 2019. This is to be followed up with bigger displacement motorcycles of about 300-400 cc by 2020, internally codenamed 02R, on an all-new platform.
The future motorcycle line-up does not have a major 100-125 cc offering, but there are some exciting models on scooters planned ahead of the implementation of BS-VI emission norms.
